THE IMPACT OF GAMBLING WITH FRANK LAZZARO

Frank Lazzaro, the Problem Gambling Prevention Specialist of the Council on Compulsive Gambling of NJ will be presenting on how to: Develop an understanding of the nature of a Gambling Disorder. Discuss co-occurrence of gambling with substance use disorder and mental health issues Recognize types of gamblers and the stages of a gambling problem. Identify vulnerable populations and at-risk, personality characteristics and identify where support, treatment, and hope exists for members of the community.

STUDENT NALAXONE TRAINING AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY

Naloxone is a medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prevent overdose by opioids such as heroin, morphine, and oxycodone. It blocks opioid receptor sites, reversing the toxic effects of the overdose. Naloxone is administered when a patient is showing signs of opioid overdose. The medication is be given by a intranasal spray which trainers will instruct particpants. Nalaxone kits will be distrubuted.

2018 PASSAIC COUNTY TEEN SUMMIT 'LEADING THE WAY: TEENS TAKE ACTION'

The Fall/Spring Summits are designed as a continuous program with the goal to motivate, encourage creativity and foster teamwork through the development and implementation of new programs that promote the prevention of substance abuse. This school year, the theme has been “Leading the Way: Teens Take Action Through the Arts.” Utilizing the arts and their imaginations, students have been working together to develop and implement an awareness instrument that can be shared as a prevention tool throughout their schools/communities bringing a positive change. As in the past, the Fall Summit kicked off the project and students have been working on their video submissions. Therefore, the May 2018 Summit is the culminating event where students and chaperones will come together for a day of team building/networking, project presentations and awarding of grants.

TACKLING OPIOIDS THROUGH PREVENTION FOR ATHLETES

Join us on Friday, September 21st at 9:00 am - 11:00 am at William Paterson University for 'Tackling Opioids through Prevention for Athletes'. The learning objectives for the audience are developing awareness about issues related to opioid use among youth athletes, identifying common pathways too opioid addiction among young athletes, and list strategies and resources for assisting young athletes who are at risk for developing opioid use disorders. This presentation will include a viewing of 'Full Frame Close Up: Prescribing Pain'. Featured Speakers: Dr. Vincent McInerney M.D. Orthopedic Surgeon/ Sports Medicine, and recovering athletes Christian Paul and Kayla Thomas.

This school year, the theme has been “Leading the Way: Students Navigate Awareness & Prevention (SNAP).” Utilizing the arts and their imaginations, students have been working together to develop and implement an awareness instrument that can be shared as a prevention tool throughout their schools/communities bringing a positive change. As in the past, the Fall Summit kicked off the program. Students will hear a motivational speaker, receive guidance on the program, participate in a work session and enjoy a lunch all while networking with other schools. High schools are inivted to send ten (10) students to participate, preferably students in grades 9 through 11. Additonal information regarding the program can be found on the inviation letter.

SCREENING, BRIEF INTERVENTION REFERRAL TO TREATMENT (SBIRT) TRAINING

This course is an introduction to SBIRT. SBIRT is an evidence based practice that uses a public health approach to identify, reduce, and prevent problematic at-risk behavior(s), such as alcohol and drug use, within and across behavioral disciplines. As a comprehensive, integrated, public health and preventive approach, SBIRT is used to identify persons at-risk of a substance use disorder (SUD) before the onset of dependency and is additionally used to deliver referrals to persons who may qualify for a SUD diagnosis. This interactive training illustrates how SBIRT can be easily integrated into practice and also offers opportunities to develop and enhance SBIRT relevant skills.

The training is open to all, however, distribution of Narcan kits are limited to the first 25 registrants who are at risk or could be in the presence of someone who is at risk for an overdose. E-CIGARETTES AND EVOLVING CHALLENGES FOR TOBACCO CONTROL

Join us on Friday December 14th, 2018 9:00am-11:00am at William Paterson University for a presentation on 'E-cigarettes and the Evolving Challenges for Tobacco Control'. We will be joined by Michelle Kennedy and speaker Christopher Ackerman from Rutgers School of Public Health Center for Tobacco Studies. Participants will be able to define the term e-cigarette, differentiate between first and second generation e-cigarette devices, compare health risks between combustible and non-combustible tobacco products, list at least three examples of local e-cigarette policies and discuss the role of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in regulating e-cigarettes.
