COMMUNITY NALAXONE TRAINING AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY (FREE)

Join us on Friday, January 11th, 2019 11:00am-12:15pm at William Paterson University for a free Narcan training. The training is open to all, however, distribution of Narcan kits are limited to the first 25 registrants who are at risk or could be in the presence of someone who is at risk for an overdose. Register today to reserve your free Narcan kit. Training includes overdose prevention strategies, signs and symptoms of overdose, how to administer naloxone, rescue breathing, overdose prevention legal rights, and support information and resources. NEW JERSEY DRUG MONITORING INITIATIVE (NJDMI)

Join us on Wednesday March 13th, 2019 9:00 AM -11:00 AM at William Paterson University for a very informative presentation from Detective Sergeant First Class Adam Polhemus of the Office of Drug Monitoring and Analysis. Participants will be able to learn about the Drug Monitoring Initiative (DMI) , understand drug environment trends and implications, recognize packaging, paraphernalia, and the drug aspects related to various narcotics, access statewide drug data and analysis of drug activity through the DMI and Homeland Security Information Network (HSIN) Communities of Interest (COI).

2018-2019 PASSAIC COUNTY TEEN SUMMIT LEADING THE WAY: SNAP (STUDENTS NAVIGATE AWARENESS & PREVENTION)

The Fall/Spring Summits are designed as a continuous program with the goal to motivate, encourage creativity and foster teamwork through development and implementation of new programs that promote the prevention of substance abuse. This school year, the theme has been "Leading the Way: Students Navigate Awareness Prevention (SNAP)." Utilizing the arts and their imaginations, students have been working together to develop and implement an awareness instrument that can be shared as a prevention tool throughout their schools/communities bringing a positive change. As in the past, the Fall Summit kicked off the project and students have been working on their video submissions.Therefore, the May 2019 Summit is the culminating event where students and chaperones will come together for a day of team building/networking, projects presentations and awarding of grants. High schools are invited to participate and, if possible, again send students that participated in the October 2018 Summit, preferably students in grades 9 through 11.

6TH ANNUAL AWARDS AND APPRECIATION BREAKFAST

We will be recognizing our 'Partners in Prevention', our elected officials and coalition members. Our special guest speaker Timonthy Stanley, Director of Community Outreach and Addictions Ministries and the Founder of Desire4Hope, will be presenting 'Getting to the Heart of Addiction'. Breakfast will be provided.

PASSAIC CITY 1ST YOUTH COUNCIL MEETING

Mayor Hector Lora invited teens throughout Passaic city to apply for a seat on the council to give them a voice and a say in the local government and policy that affects them. The twelve teen members of the newly formed mayor's Youth Council in Passaic address their No. 1 concern, substance abuse.

SCREENING, BRIEF INTERVENTION REFERRAL TO TREATMENT (SBIRT) TRAINING

This course is an introduction to SBIRT. SBIRT is an evidence based practice that uses a public health approach to identify, reduce, and prevent problematic at-risk behavior(s), such as alcohol and drug use, within and across behavioral disciplines. As a comprehensive, integrated, public health and preventive approach, SBIRT is used to identify persons at-risk of a substance use disorder (SUD) before the onset of dependency and is additionally used to deliver referrals to persons who may qualify for a SUD diagnosis. This interactive training illustrates how SBIRT can be easily integrated into practice and also offers opportunities to develop and enhance SBIRT relevant skills.

THE INTERSECTION OF LGBTQ, STIGMA, MENTAL HEALTH & SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Define basic LGBTQ terminology including: gender expression, gender identity and sexual orientation. Discuss best practices for increasing inclusiveness within health encounters in the mental health and substance abuse space for LGBTQ clients. Learn more about the stigma-free communities in Passaic County. Recognize how Atlantic Health System is addressing stigma through the No More Whispers campaign.

TEEN SUMMIT LEADING THE WAY: "LIFE IS WORTH LIVING"

The Fall/Spring Summits are designed as a continuous program with the goal to motivate, encourage creativity and foster teamwork through the development and implementation of new programs that promote the prevention of substance abuse and mental health awareness. The theme for this school year is "Leading the Way: Life is Worth Living." Utilizing the arts and their implement an awareness instrument that can be shared as a prevention tool throughout their schools/communities bringing positive change. As in the past, the Fall Summit will kick off the program. Students will hear a motivational speaker, receive guidance on the program, participate in a work session and enjoy a lunch all while networking with other schools. The culminating event will again be held in the Spring (5/1/20) where Fall participants will again come together for a day of team building and project presentations, awarding of grants as well as networking. High schools are invited to send ten (10) students to participate, preferably students in grade 9 through 11.
